Professor Merryn Tawhai, Director at ABI, welcomes you to the Institute and shares some information about its vision and future, as well as some interesting facts.
Our Institute is pioneering the development of mathematical models of human physiology and new instrumentation techniques for a wide variety of healthcare applications. ABI’s vision is to provide virtual human models which can be personalised and used, with new medical devices, as the basis for improved and lower cost healthcare.
Bioengineering is the fastest growing engineering discipline worldwide and equally attracts male and female students into undergraduate and graduate programmes.
ABI has strong research links with the Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences. A very close relationship is maintained with the Department of Engineering Science, particularly through involvement in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Biomedical Engineering degree programme.
The Institute has around 300 members, of which more than 105 are graduate students enrolled in Doctoral or Master's research. All our students are members of at least one multi-disciplinary research team, which often include valuable collaborations with domestic and international clinicians, medical professionals, computer scientists and bioengineers.
