Auckland Bioengineering Institute

Related faculties and departments

The Auckland Bioengineering Institute enjoys close ties with several University of Auckland faculties and departments.

From research group to large scale research institute
The ABI was established as a large scale research institute in 2008. It had operated as a research institute managed through the Faculty of Engineering from 2001-2007. For 20 years previous, this joint bioengineering research group had operated between the Department of Engineering Science in the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Joint academic appointment in related departments and faculties

The Institute has joint academic appointments and strong research links across three faculties: Engineering, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences.

The Faculty of Engineering is the ABI’s nearest neighbour faculty and a very close relationship is maintained with the Department of Engineering Science in that faculty. Several academic staff in the department undertake their research at the ABI. The Department of Engineering Science administers the BE(Hons) in Biomedical Engineering degree, graduates of which frequently chose to pursue doctoral or masters study at the Institute.

The Institute has a long-term association with the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Several principal investigators and doctoral students are joint members with the Department of Physiology and the Department of Anatomy with Radiology.
