Kieran is a graduate of the University of Auckland's Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering (BME) programme. During this undergraduate degree Kieran completed a thesis on heart deformation from 3D cine DENSE magnetic resonance imaging.

Kieran joined the Auckland Bioengineering Institute in 2005 where he continued his interest in MRI as a doctoral student in the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance research group. His doctoral thesis, entitled 'Understanding and measuring flow in aortic stenosis with MRI', was completed in 2009 under the supervisoon of Associate Professor Alistair Young.

After graduation Kieran moved to Switerzerland where he is a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory of functional and metabolic imaging at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
