Studying towards: Bachelor of Ophthalmic Optics and Optometry

Period of internship: February to July 2015

Ferdinand came to the ABI for his practical semester abroad. His interests were in

  • eye tracking,
  • determining vision acuity, and
  • visual screening methods.

The project he worked on was testing new methods for vision testing, based on computer based analysis of the optokinetic reflex, an involuntary movement of the eye that occurs when a person watches, typically striped stimulus patterns.

The method has potential application in non-verbal participants such as younger children, who are particularly difficult to measure due to compliance issues.
