Alex finished his Bachelor of Engineering with Honours specialising in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Auckland in 2014, and went straight into a masters to continue a project he started as a summer student at the ABI.


Modelling Surgical Management of Complex Hip Deformities

The overall aim of this study is to create a surgical tool to assist orthopaedic surgeons in surgical planning for patients with Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE).

The tool will ideally be able to automatically segment a patients CT scans of the hip and generate a finite element (FE) model in which stress simulations and impingement analysis can be conducted.

By using an existing shape model of a femur with SCFE a tool will be created which will segment a set of CT scans to obtain patient specific geometries of the femur. Stress simulations of the FE models will be performed using a free FE analysis code (FEBio, Utah, USA) using loads and boundary conditions scaled to the subject.
