Alex finished his Bachelor of Engineering with Honours specialising in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Auckland in 2014. Following numerous sporting injuries, including two ACL reconstructions, Alex has a strong focus on injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies using a musculoskeletal modelling approach.

Evaluating inertial sensors as a surrogate tool for joint damage

My project consists of performing gait analysis on volunteers at the AUT Millennium gait lab who will also wear inertial sensors. I will develop a statistical model that links joint loading and torques to inertial sensor measurement. This will be validated against additional participants. In addition, I will also evaluate if any data from the inertial sensors can be a good surrogate for knee joint loading. This will have implications on mobile sensing of load outside of the gait lab. Future aims are to apply this model to various sporting codes including running.
