Biography

Jared Jordan will graduate in May of 2017 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) specialising in Mechatronics Engineering. He is working towards a Masters of Engineering in Bioengineering at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, scheduled for completion in early 2018.

Thesis

Slow fluid control using a soft dielectric elastomer pump (DEP)
Dielectric Elastomer’s (DE) are smart material systems that are essentially polymer based compliant capacitors. Over the past decade, the Biomimetics Lab has developed their own DE technology to successfully perform in the following fields; actuation, sensing, basic signal processing and energy generation. However, the area of fluid control remains to be sufficiently explored.

This project aims to design and develop a ‘soft’ pump whose actuation is solely dependent on DE technology. Emphasis will be placed on the design and fabrication of the Dielectric Elastomer Pump (DEP) device. Potential applications with this device can include slow drug delivery, electronic cooling, prosthetics and artificial organs.
