Biography

Paul began his career completing a New Zealand Certificate Science (Chemistry), conducting atmospheric research in New Zealand and Antarctica while working for the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA). In 1997 he moved on to undertake a Bachelor of Engineering  (Honours)  in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

In the years following his BE, Paul worked as a research and development engineer creating electro-mechanical devices for various commercial markets, and in 2010 returned to university to undertake a PhD degree at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute with Professors Alistair Young and Poul Nielsen, Associate Professors Brett Cowan and Andrew Taberner, and Dr Ralph Stewart (Cardiologist, Auckland District Health Board).

Research | Current

As part of his doctoral research Paul developed equipment compatible with clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and specialised scanning techniques. These methods and equipment allow researchers to exercise patients while inside an MRI. The equipment is now being utilised in a clinical study with researchers from the ABI, the Faculty of Medical and Helath Sciences, and the Auckland District Health Board investigating cardiovascular function while the heart is loaded during exercise.

Data from this study will lead to increased understanding of cardiovascular disease and treatment methods and aims to provide a clinical tool for the prognosis of cardiovascular disease.
