David Russell

David Russell received a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Engineering Science from The University of Auckland. David's undergraduate research project was the design of a implantable wireless accelerometer for monitoring movement and motion.

In 2009 David joined the Auckland Bioengineering Institute as a doctoral candidate. David's PhD research focussed on the miniaturisation of fully implantable telemetry systems, powering these devices, and the integration of novel sensors for chronic monitoring.

In particular, he is interested in the use of electrochemical sensors for chronic monitoring of in-vivo tissue oxygen tension. His system for wireless oxygen sensing will be used to chronically study extracellular oxygen concentration and to characterize how kidney oxygen levels change during the evolution of chronic kidney disease.

Related sensors offer the potential of providing chronic monitoring of parameters such as glucose and could overcome the need for patients to require blood tests on a daily basis.

In 2012 David joined Telemetry Research where he is a research engineer developing commercial applications for his doctoral research.
