Auckland Bioengineering Institute
Message from the director
Welcome to the Auckland Bioengineering Institute
Professor Peter Hunter
Our institute is pioneering the development of mathematical models of human physiology and new instrumentation techniques for a wide variety of healthcare applications. The ABI’s vision is to provide virtual human models which can be personlised and used, with new medical devices, as the basis for improved and lower cost 21st century healthcare.
Bioengineering is the fastest growing engineering discipline worldwide and equally attracts male and female students into undergraduate and graduate programmes.
The ABI has strong research links with the Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences. A very close relationship is maintained with the Department of Engineering Science, particularly through involvement in the BE(Hons) in Biomedical Engineering degree programme.
The institute has around 180 members, of which more than 70 are graduate students enrolled in Doctoral or Masters research. All our students are members of at least one multi-disciplinary research team, which often include valuable collaborations with domestic and international clinicians, medical professionals, computer scientists and bioengineers.
I invite you to explore our website to learn more about the Auckland Bioengineering Institute’s innovative research programme, and its outstanding scholars, staff and facilities.
