Profile
Matthew Barrett received a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Auckland and he began his doctoral study at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute in 2009.
Matthew is researching functional Magentic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) - a medical imaging technique which allows clinicians and researchers to obtain images of brain activity. The technique is relatively safe, rapid, and non-invasive, however exactly how the images relate to what is happening in the brain remains poorly understood.
Matthew's research is focussed on developing mathematical models to better understand the relationship between the fMRI signal and the underlying brain activity. He hopes that his research will help our interpretation of fMRI images and improve our understanding of how the brain functions in health and disease.
