Profile
Thiranja Prasad Babarenda Gamage received a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Hons) from The University of Auckland in 2008 and subsequently began a PhD degree at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.
Prasad's research project investigates modelling and identifying the heterogeneous mechanical properties of soft tissues, namely the breast. Accurately modelling and identifying the mechanical properties of the breast would improve the ability of breast bio-mechanical models to track cancerous lesions.
He is currently creating and validating a framework for identifying these mechanical properties in-vivo using non-invasive methods. The framework makes use of non-linear, anisotropic, 3D Finite Element models to describe the mechanical behavior of the breast, including skin and its underlying tissues.
The models are complemented with novel instrumentation and imaging techniques currently being developed at the ABI to create rich experimental datasets from which the mechanical properties of the tissues can be more easily identified using non-linear optimization techniques.
